Sigh.

What IS this world coming to when we can’t just turn a blind eye to those promoting hate and bigotry. I mean, does it really matter if members of corporate America are using money to support organizations that work every day to discriminate against fellow Americans? Sure, maybe it IS technically their own personal money. Sure, maybe they go on record as saying that the company they built supports this bigotry and will continue to do so. We all have the right to free speech in this country, so who are YOU to get upset about them promoting hate?

Really, can’t we all just get along? All this protesting and arguing makes me squirmy. So much righteous indignation going around lately. We’ve got people upset about a lack of gun control just because there was a little incident the other week. Hello? It’s in the Bill of Rights that we have the right to bear arms! And if it’s in the Bill of Rights, that means we shouldn’t question it AT ALL. The founding father’s used their critical thinking skills so we wouldn’t have to! Isn’t that great?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I AM able to think for myself, and do so quite often. But it just seems to get me into trouble. I’ve voiced a strong opinion about standing up to those who work to ensure I never have the right to marry as a lesbian, only to be told that I won’t be able to change minds by speaking up. They’re probably right. I mean, if women hadn’t demanded to be seen as equal citizens who deserved the right to vote, just think how much better this country would be! Aprons for everyone!

It just doesn’t sit well with me when people talk about their moral outrage at injustice. For one, how do I know they’re even voicing their own opinion? They could just be spouting off the most popular sound bite of the day. God knows we Americans don’t know how to think for ourselves. Let’s just all quietly sit on our couches, not being indignant at all the evil, ignorance, hate, and injustice in the world. We don’t need to talk about it. And let’s sure as hell not try to change people’s minds!

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t personally support hate or bigotry. But I don’t need to go around trying to stop it either. I mean, I’m just one person and I can’t make a difference in this world at all. Look at Rosa Parks. Just sitting on that bus, refusing to budge from her seat. Talk about stubborn! I wonder if she even stopped for a second to consider how many people she was inconveniencing with her antics. Please, don’t use her as role model. If you do, we’ll just end up with social change all over the damn place.

I beg you. Stop being morally outraged. Stop taking a public and loud stand for what you believe in. This righteous indignation at you being righteously indignant is giving me a terrible headache.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some job applications to fill out. I hear the Klan has a great dental package. I don’t support what they believe in, but in this economy, you can’t turn down good insurance.
